What You Need to Know About Planning Your NYC City Hall Wedding
There’s something so special about having an NYC City Hall wedding. Maybe it’s the history, the energy, or just the fact that it feels uniquely yours. No big production, no pressure, just a meaningful moment in the heart of one of the world’s most iconic cities.
I’m Nathalie, a wedding photographer based in NYC. I specialize in candid, documentary-style photography that captures real moments as they unfold. If you’re thinking about having a City Hall wedding in New York, I’d love to help you document it in a way that feels true to who you are.
Let’s walk through what to expect, why couples choose this route, and how to make the most of your day.
What is a City Hall Wedding in NYC?
When people talk about a "City Hall wedding" in New York City, they’re usually referring to the Manhattan Marriage Bureau at 141 Worth Street in Lower Manhattan. It’s where civil marriage ceremonies are held by the City Clerk's office.
City Hall weddings are known for being quick, simple, and low-pressure. You can get legally married without a big production, and still have a day that feels personal and meaningful (plus, beautiful photos that feel like you).
Why Choose a City Hall Wedding?
It’s straightforward and affordable
No need to plan a huge event
The city adds its own energy to the experience
You can keep it just the two of you, or invite a few close people
It's flexible! You can pair it with portraits, dinner, or a bigger celebration later
Real NYC City Hall Wedding Photos
Lisa and Pablo live in London, but New York was the perfect place for them to have a civil ceremony. Lisa is American, and they wanted to honor her roots here before hosting a larger celebration in Spain, where Pablo is originally from. In June, they gathered with just ten of their closest family members for a ceremony at the NYC Marriage Bureau. The day was relaxed but full of meaning, exactly what they wanted. Afterward, they celebrated with dinner on the rooftop of the Wythe Hotel, overlooking the Williamsburg skyline. Lisa had even created a Pinterest board ahead of time to help guide the stylish, playful vibe of the day. It was the perfect mix of intimacy, family connection, and the unmistakable energy of New York City.
What to Expect on the Day
Here’s a quick breakdown:
Appointments: You’ll need two, one for your marriage license, and one for the ceremony. Both are scheduled through Project Cupid on the City Clerk’s website.
Documents: Bring valid photo IDs and your printed marriage license. You’ll also need a witness (I can be that person if needed).
Check-in: When you arrive, you’ll go through security and check in with your documents. You’ll be given a number and wait for your turn.
The Ceremony: It's brief, usually around 5 minutes. Afterwards, we can head outside for portraits around the courthouse or elsewhere in the city.
Timing varies, but the whole process typically takes 30–90 minutes depending on the day.
Where to Take Wedding Photos in NYC

The steps of the courthouse
Foley Square
Chinatown or Tribeca side streets for color and texture
City Hall Park
Or hop over to Dumbo or Brooklyn Bridge Park if you're up for a short trip
How I Photograph City Hall Weddings
My style is natural and unposed. I’ll capture the full story: the nervous waiting room glances, the small smiles, the walk down the steps after you’re officially married. I also guide you through portraits without making it feel stiff or awkward. If you have specific ideas or want to stop by a favorite neighborhood or cafe, I’m always up for that too.
